The series of Register Books at Walton have been remarkably well kept and preserved. They are as follows:-
Volume I. consists of 29 full leaves measuring 13½ ins, by 8 ins.,with a “fly leaf” at the beginning and a half leaf (cut away) at end, all of parchment. The binding is also of parchment. It is numbered thus: “No. 1. Baptisms, Marriages and Burials 1566-1666” with a label pasted on outside cover.
The commencement of the entries is headed by a statement in Latin, that the early part is a transcript of Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths made (“according to the Constitutions of 1597”) on the 10th of September, 1598, by Robert Bluntt, Rector of Walton at that time. That the entries were taken from a previous Paper Register which contained entries by (his predecessor in the Rectory) Harold Pachet from the year 1566 (Oct. 10) as well as Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials which had taken place during his own incumbency, commencing Jan. 1st, 1577.
The entries are more or less mixed throughout, and after 1577 are all in Latin, except during the Commonwealth. They are varied by quaint little references concerning persons and things, and as regards Baptisms, here and there the hour of birth is also given for astrological purposes. [See October 10th 1642.]
In this volume, loose, are two “Register Bills” (parchment) which were apparently made for forwarding to the Archidiaconal Registry
A. Mar. 30, 1628, to Mar. 30, 1629, containing the marriage of John Maultbie & Agnes Blunt. (See in loco.)
B. Dated Mar. 25, 1633. This year there were no marriages.
Both are endorsed as having been “Exd.”
There is a Transcript at Leicester for Walton-on-the-Wolds for the year 1561-2, before the commencement of the above volume.
Volume II. is of exactly the same measurement as the previous one, It is bound in parchment boards and is made up of 17 leaves (34 pp.) with blank paper fly leaf at beginning. It is labelled “Baptisms, Marriages and Burials 1689-1768,” and is headed inside as follows: “A Register Book containing a table of the Christenings, Marriages, Burials in the Parish of Walton-on-the-Wolds, in the County and Archdeaconry of Leicester.”
The first entry is a Baptism, Sep. 13, 1689.
The different kinds of entries are kept distinct at first. There appears to be a hiatus of about 26 years between Vol. I. and II.
Volume III. is labelled on cover “No. 3. Baptisms and Burials 1769-1812.” It consists of 23 parchment leaves and one loose half-leaf containing “Burials for 1812,” pinned in. The penultimate leaf has an entry of Marriage, that of John Roe & Ann Pollard, 17 Nov. 1776.
Volume IV. is labelled “No. 4. Marriages 1754-1777.” It contains only 10 leaves (parchment) measuring 9½ by 15½ inches, stitched in a wrapper of “marbled” paper.
Volume V. labelled “Banns and Marriages 1778-1804,” is a paper book of printed forms, twenty pages for Banns and twenty pages for Marriages.
Volume VI. labelled “Marriages 1804-1812,” contains 40 leaves, but only a few pages have been used.
Volume VII. labelled “Baptisms 1812” contains 47 leaves of parchment measuring 15 by 10 inches, bound in rough calf; but only the first leaf is written on, and a number of blank leaves have been cut out.
Volume VIII. is labelled “Marriages 1814-1836.” It consists of 50 paper leaves (100 pages) of printed forms, but only 14 pages have been used. It is bound in parchment boards.
These abstracts have been made by Mr. Matthew Pearson, and are now printed under his supervision, by permission of the Rev. Montague B. Bird, Rector of Walton.
