Phillimore's Marriages - Swithland 1624 to 1837

The first Register of Swithland now existing in the parish consists of a single sheet of parchment measuring 19 by 8 inches and containing fifty-four mixed entries of Births, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials for the years 1676 to 1681. It is not (quite evidently) the original, or even a transcript from an original, but rather a compilation as the heading (given later) shows; the writing is all by one hand, good, clear and well-preserved, quite easy to read, in mixed modern with occasional Court-hand letters.

The first entry is: “Thomas, the son of William and An Porter baptized March 26th, 1676.”

The first. (existing) Volume consists of thirty-nine parchment leaves measuring 10¼ by 8½ inches, bound in parchment boards; the whole is loose in the covers, sections of leaves almost falling out ; it badly needs rebinding. First come eleven leaves of Baptisms with an occasional Marriage or Burial from 1700 to 1741. Then follow seven leaves and one-third of a page of Burials from 1702 to 1744 and to page XLIII, then about one and a-half pages of Baptisms from 1741 to 1745. During Mr. Brokesby’s time as Rector, from 1700 onwards, he frequently makes a note, “A Court at Newtown Lindford” and sometimes adds, “me judice.” This was the Court of the Peculiar of Groby under whose jurisdiction were Newtown Linford, Ratby, Swithland, Glenfield, Stanton—under—Bardon, Ansty and Cropston.

Grouped Marriages begin (chronologically) at page LI and continue for five pages from 1701 to 1727; the entries then recommence on page XLIX which has a note, “Here begins a Continuation of Marriages from page LVI” (a mistake for LV). These continue for two pages from 1728 to 1733, then recommence on page XLV; a note states, “The continuation of Marriages from page L,” for the period 1733 to 1742.

Thenceforward the pages are numbered 1, 2, 3, etc., and contain mixed entries, chiefly Burials and Baptisms from 1746 to 1783. At page 20, most of which is blank, there follows a blank leaf, pages 21 and 22. Pages 23 to 28 contain Burials only, 1760-78. 1779, “N.B.—None buried this year,” then 1780 to 1783. The writing is generally bold, good and easy to read, but quantities of “pounce” remained between the pages, which, congealed in patches by damp, have stained them ; several pages also show holes and the writing in places is faint.

Volume II consists of one blank paper leaf, much torn, thirty-four parchment leaves measuring 9½ by 7¾ inches bound in parchment boards and in good preservation, except that the covers are damaged by damp and the pages stained by pounce and damp as before. Three blank paper leaves. The bold, clear handwriting is wholly by Mr. John Llwyd, Rector from 1760 to 1813; the pages are numbered. The entries are Christenings from 1783 to 1813, pages 1 to 31, one entry only on page 31, the rest of that leaf and 14 leaves and 1½ sides of the 15th are blank; several have portions cut away; then 6½ leaves (except one page, blank except the note, “So far reckoned with the Stamp Office Nov. 9th, 1793”). The Christenings in this volume are prefaced by a “Memorandum.- When it duly on the Registry of Burials, Marriages, Births and Christenings was laid by Parliament ‘Anno vicessimo tertio Geogii tertii Regis’ three sheets of stamped paper were bought by the Church wardens of Swithland, one for the purpose of registering the Births and Christenings, one the Marriages, and one the Burials. But as single sheets are liable to he mislaid, it is thought advisable, to the end of more effectually perpetuating evidence, to make a transcript or copy of all such entries in a Book. The Christenings, in number 43, are as follows :-“
At the other end of the volume, inverted, Burials are entered. “Memorandum.— The following 49 entries were made on a single sheet of stamped paper.” Then follow Burials from 1783 to 1812. The Stamped Sheets here referred to are still preserved. There is also a single sheet of parchment measuring 13 by 6 7/8 inches containing transcripts of entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials for 1812. The Marriages collated with the original entries in Volume III agree except that the name Elizabeth Lakin is given as Labin.

There do not appear to be any entries of extraneous matters and few curious ones. In 1788 Mary, Elizabeth and Martha Newby were baptized, and a note says they were “at one birth.” Many entries occur of children “received into the Congregation of Christ’s flock” with notes of their private baptisms or being
“named.”

On page 21, Volume II, is a list of children named or privately baptised but not yet brought to church. One entry is, “John, son of (blank) Deakin and (blank) his wife, Feb. 4, 1801. 14 weeks old, and another older not yet named. The woman said “times were two hard to have a christening.” In a later hand is a gloss on
this, “and the silly rector received the excuse !! See rubric.”

Volume III consists of printed forms and contains Marriages from 1754 to 1812 and many Banns of couples married elsewhere.

Volume IV is also printed forms and contains Marriages from 1813 to June, 1837, and Banns as before. Both these volumes are loose in their covers, probably the result, of being kept in an iron chest in the Church. This being seldom opened, the damp condenses in warm weather and wets the books.

Volume V contains one Marriage in 1837 and is still in use.

There are three parchment sheets of Transcripts of Baptisms, 1817, and Burials, 1816 and 1817.

Mr. Hartopp’s list of Bishops Transcripts preserved in the Archdeacon’s Registry, 29, Friar Lane, Leicester, shows that transcripts earlier than the existing Registers exist there for the years 1616, 1624, 1633 to 1638; and that others for 1687, 1695, 1701, 1706 to 1708, are in the possession of the Rev. W. G. Dimock Fletcher. These were bought by Mr. Dimock Fletcher some years ago, having been publicly offered for sale with other muniments belonging to the Peculiar of Groby.

These abstracts have been made by Mr. E. K. Elliott, of Leicester, by permission of the Rev. J. M. Dixon, Vicar of Swithland.

* There is confusion in this Register between Ratby, a place spelt Rothby, and Rothley. Groby is p. Ratby, but frequently occurs here (unmistakeably) as p. Rothby. Nicholl’s History of Leicester spells Ratby variously as Rotebie, Rotby and Rotebi (never with an “h”). In places through the Register it is doubtful whether it is Rothly or Rothby, or whether Rothley or Ratby is meant.
