Anciently called Glouseby, this place is now usually spelt Lowesby, sometimes Loseby.
It is clear from the list, below, of Bishops’ Transcripts that an earlier Register formerly existed but is now lost.
Volume I., marked A., consists of nine parchment leaves measuring 11¼-½ by 7½-5/8 inches, and contains Births and Baptisms 1653-1711, Marriages 1658 (none earlier) to 1711, and Burials 1654-1710. The binding is limp parchment. No part of this book seems to be a transcript. Very loosely attached at end is one paper leaf, 11 3/8 by 7¼ inches, badly torn and frayed on the three free sides. This is much too full of entries (probably owing to delay in procuring volume II.), the top and bottom ones, chiefly Marriages, are therefore seriously mutilated. The first parchment page is blank, entries begin on page 2, a very wise plan, they are not at all rubbed.
On the cover inside is:—
“ Loseby Register—marked for such by me Edw. Wills Carr Vicar this 27th clay of Oct. 1782 it not being mark’d before.”
This is the first entry, “Richard Jorden the sonne of Richard Jorden & Mary his wife was born the eight and Twenteth day off December 1653.”
The entries are generally well written, especially the latter part, and easily legible, no entries are faded. Wide spacing is adopted and lines ruled between groups of entries with many blank spaces, a great pity in view of the fragile paper leaf at end. Entries are classified throughout, none misplaced. General condition is good.
Volume II. marked B, 21 parchment leaves nearly 9¾-7/8 by 6 3/8 inches. Two paper flyleaves at beginning, one bears, “The Register of Loseby continued 1716-7.” Two paper flyleaves at end, one records a list of “briefes” for fires and storms in various places. Binding, parchment boards, condition good.
Pages 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 and one entry on page 8 seem to be a transcript; page 4 is blank. More than half of leaf 5, half of leaf 6, and two-thirds of leaf 7 are cut away. There are entries both sides of leaf 5, one side only of leaves 6 and 7, otherwise blank. These entries are not in proper sequence, 1732-24-26-24-25, etc. One page where Baptisms and Burials meet is blank.
The volume contains Baptisms 1714-83, Marriages 1713-59 (partly parallel to Volume III.), Burials 1711-83, those from 1777- 83 are at end inverted.
Under date 1763 occurs :—“27 Novr. William Baresby, Clerk, Vicar of Loseby & Rector of Ratcliff buried 3 Decr.
“George Ashby, B.D., fellow of S. John’s Coll. Cambr. was appointed sequestrator and being desired to enter the two preceding articles was surprised to find the 7th, 8th & 9th pages backwards almost cut out, but tho’ the appearance is bad, yet he judges all is right and fair, tho’ there are only 2 single entries for 1730, & 1731, and none for 1732. Great part of this Register is planely (sic) a transcript, as may be judged not only from the writing; but such blunders as of Eliz. Warner & Eliz. Tomlin, v. years 1715, 1716 p. 2 & 3.” This refers to two burials, Warner’s is entered so again under 1716, Tomlin is not there while Eliz. Dean is. Bound in parchment boards and in good condition. Writing in the first half is poor but legible; latter portion is quite good.
Volume III., marked C, ruled parchment in paper covers, Marriages and Banns 1755-96, No Marriage is registered for the years 1783-94, it is therefore thought advisable to give the banns published for that period. This period, except the two first banns, corresponds, as a marginal note shows, with the period when register entries were taxed, these marriages would therefore be entered on stamped sheets ‘which are lost. This volume has suffered severely from damp; a triangular patch in centre bottom of the leaves all through the book, measuring about six inches across at base, being perished. As the banns are recorded at great length for some time, marriage and banns entries never both come upon the damaged portion, it is therefore nearly always possible to supplement destroyed parts of one from the other, thus, fortunately, no entry is completely destroyed.
Volume IV., marked E., Burials and Baptisms 1796-1812. A note inside cover states “No baptisms from the years 1783 to 1795” (inclusive). One baptism is entered on the paper fly-leaf at begin. ning. Twelve parchment leaves, 7½ by 6 5/8 inches, in parchment boards. Several leaves cut out at end. Paper fly-leaf at beginning, not at end.
Volume V. Marriages 1815-37. Printed forms. Loose in cover. No marriage entries occur 1659-60, 1662-66, 1668-70, 1672-3, 1675-6, 1680, 1683-89, 1691, 1696, 1702, 1708-9, 1712, 1715-21 (or2?) 1725, 1727-32, 1734-5, 1739, 1746, 1748, 1752, 1754, 1756-7, 1761-2, 1768, 1777-9 (?), 1781, 1783-94.
The Bishops’ Transcripts exist either in the Archdeacon’s Register, 29, Friar Lane, Leicester, or (marked C) at Lincoln for the years :—1561, 1565-6, 1604*, 1606*, 1608, 1612-17-21-22, 1625-30, 1632-34, 1636-39, 1672-74-75-77-78-84-85-90-93-95 to 98, 1700. These supply many of the gaps.
