Phillimore's Marriages - Kirby Muxloe 1619 to 1837

As usual the earliest volume is lost; the Bishops’ transcripts exist for 1561 and 1566.

Volume I. The Rector of Glenfield produced some detached leaves and portions of leaves, saying they were largely illegible and he did not know what they were. They proved to be part of a register beginning in 1597 belonging to Kirby Muxloe and comparison with the existing first volume there makes certain they were torn out of that, the parchment bands which held them hanging loose. They agree in size with the existing first volume, and dates also fit, with some gaps; the latest date now on these leaves is 1634 (Baptisms), which occurs on one of the leaves half cut away, later entries for that year and 1635, and perhaps some for 1636, were probably on the severed portions, only one entry for 1636 occurs in the volume proper.

The heading (on the loose leaves) is :— “A True Regester of all the names of such as have bine christened marriede and Buried in kirby since the yeare of our Lorde God 1597 and so truely keept Ever since.” Notwithstanding which the register is very badly kept, generally ignoring datal sequence, and, doubtless there were many omissions.

The first entry is :— “1597 Robart Ballarde was Baptissede the 14 of Januarie in the same yeare.”

The book is bound in limp parchment and contains 26 parchment leaves or parts of leaves measuring about 12 by 5 5/8 to 6 inches, in poor condition and very urgently needs binding and the loose leaves should be replaced. Taking these as part of the book the first three are practically whole; the outer edges (including parts of entries) of leaves 4 and 5 (very bad) are badly perished. Leaf 6 is deeply stained and has a big decayed hole in it. About half of leaves 7 and 8 are cut away, probably carrying entries; their outer edges and portions of entries are also perished. Leaf 9 is only a fragment, half or more vertically and two thirds horizontally being cut and torn away; a narrow strip remaining of full length shows ends of entries practically all down, and the year 1608 occurs. In the volume proper about one-quarter of leaf 17 is cut away; it may have been blank, as large parts of some pages are, on one side at least. Nearly all leaf 19 is cut away, it contains no regular entries and may have been blank. Nearly half of leaf 21 is gone, and 15 closely written lines (?entries) at top of page 2 are so crabbedly written in poor, faded, ink, they cannot be restored to legibility. More than half leaf 23 is gone.

The volume, with the detached leaves, records Births and Baptisms from 1597 to 1702. Marriages 1619 to 1702. Burials 1597 (but hopelessly mutilated, the entries from 1597 to 1609 being lost except one or two) to 1702. Datal order is mainly ignored, entries occur in continual disorder, the latest in 1702 being on page one ! The writing of the detached leaves is generally fairly good and legible, which makes it possible to decipher many imperfect entries; later it is exceptionally illiterate, bad and difficult to read.

“Memoranda. Robert Port confirmed pastor of Kirby-muck-lesse (in the County of Leicester) by Authority of Parliament the 21th of June 1649.

“The sayd Robert Port was confirmed also Rector of Glenfeild (in the sayd County) by Order of Parliament the 7th of May foilowinge 1650.”

Volume II. “A Register Booke of all Marriages Births and Burialls for Glenfield Kirby and Branston Acording to the Act of Parliament from the 29th September 1653.” Limp parchment paper-lined covers hold 6 parchment leaves measuring 11-11¼ by 7 1/8 inches, in fair order but stained and grub-eaten. Records Marriages (all on leaf 1) 1653-5 and 1662, none in 1656-61. Births and Baptisms 1649-64. Burials 1653-64.

Amongst the Baptisms in 1655 is “Note this that all those before written and after written that are without names died before they were baptyzed.”

Volume III. “A Register Book for Kirby Muxloe in the Parish of Glenfield ; begun in the Year of Christ, 1703. Mr. John Sherratt Rector. Christenings, Weddings and Buryals in Kirby Muxloe in the Year 1703”

On a flyleaf is :— “ Kirby Mucless not Muxloe.” 16 parchment leaves, about 11¾ by 6 5/8 inches, in stout parchment boards, in good order. Saving some few illiterate entries and poor ink the writing is good and legible throughout.

Records Baptisms 1703-58. Burials 1703-59. Marriages. 1703-59.

The last page contains Briefs, inverted.

Volume IV. A large book in stout parchment boards containing 10 parchment leaves about 14¾ by 8¾ inches, the last leaf rather loose, otherwise in good order and easily legible. Baptisms 1759-93. Marriages 1759-83. Burials 1759-93, a note that “none appeared” for 1791.

Volume V. Bound in brown paper contains the five stamped paper leaves, printed forms, good order; records Baptisms 1784-89. Marriages 1784-94. No Burials.

Volume VI. Baptisms and Burials 1794-1812. Parchment in papered boards, good order.

Volume VII. Marriages, printed forms, 1796-1811.

Volume VIII. Baptisms, printed forms, 1813-1880. Inside the first cover is a list of the Registers as “sent to Government in 1831.” The first Register is stated to run “from 1597 to 1626. Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. This proves that the torn out leaves belong to the first volume, and were removed since that year, although the second date given is wrong. Volume II. is given as “from 1702 to 1759,” showing that a cursory glance only was given at the first page, whereas the earliest entries are on the second leaf; so much for the value of returns made to government.

Volume IX. Baptisms 1880 (May) still in use.

Volume X. Burials 1813, still in use.

Volume Xl. Marriages, printed forms, 1813-36.

Volume XII. Marriages 1838, in use.

The Bishops Transcripts are especially important here as they cover various missing periods. They exist in Leicester (marked * at Lincoln) for :— 1561, ‘66, 1604*, 1606*, 1607*, 1609*, 1612, ‘13, ‘25 to ‘28, ‘32 to ‘34, ‘36 to ‘39, ‘61 to ‘67, ‘69, ‘72 to ‘75, ‘77 to ‘81, ‘86, ‘87, ‘94 to ‘96, ‘98 to 1700.

These abstracts have been made by Mr. E. K. Elliott by permission of the Rector, the Rev. Octavius Philpott, and the Curate in Charge, the Rev. H. C. Gannell, and are printed under Mr. Elliott’s direction with the like permission.

Hereunder K. means Kirby; B., Braunston, and G., Glenfield.
