Houghton was anciently called Houkton, Hohtone and Houttone; in the Transcripts it is sometimes Houghton Gartry, i.e., Gartrey Hundred.
The earliest Register, like so many in Leicestershire, unfortunately is lost; the Marriage entries for the missing period are supplied, so far as they exist, from the Bishop’s Transcripts.
The first existing volume contains 32 parchment leaves measuring 11 5/16 to 11¾ (bare) inches by 7½ inches. There is a paper fly leaf at the beginning the end one is torn out. On the fly leaf is recorded the first entry in point of date, “John son of Michael Gamble baptized March 8, 1651.” This entry is repeated at the extreme top of the first parchment page; below it is this heading, “This is A Booke belonginge to the towne of Houghton for the recordinge of all Marriages, Births and Burialls accordinge to the Act of Parliaemnt” (sic.).
Below this is a certificate, signed by “Tho. Beaumont,” of the appointment of William Peake as “Parish Register.” Rest of the page is blank, except for pen scrawlings of some shameless scribe.
The first regular entry is :—
“William the son of Richard Wood baptised Dec. 25th, 1653.”
The volume contains entries of Baptisms from 1651 (I) to 1730; Marriages, 1654 to 1730, and Burials, 1653 to 1731. These are generally neatly and clearly classified, but sometimes mixed. The writing, generally good and always legible, none being faded, is sometimes parish-clerkly script. There is much vacant space between groups of entries.
There are no entries whatever for 1659. Following the entries for 1664 are those for 1671, no Marriages, and the rest of the page blank. Then come entries for 1667-8, the next page quite blank. Thereafter entries continue from 1672 to 1700. Between the entries for 1702 and those for 1703 are inserted duplicates of the entries (no Marriages) for 1671 below which is this note “haec pagina post Impletione Anni scripta fuit.” There are no entries for 1701-2, the next are for 1703 and run on unbroken to the end.
Volume II. consists of 20 parchment heaves measuring 15 to 15 1/8 by 5 7/8 inches, bound in parchment boards. It contains all classes of entries classified. Baptisms 1731 to 1775. Marriages 1731 (none) to 1753 (none). Burials 1730 to 1775. Writing is generally legible but much of it by the parish clerk. Condition quite good.
Volume III., 13 parchment leaves, measuring 15 by 9 5/8 inches, bound in rough tooled calf, broken at back, contains Baptisms and Burials only 1776-1812. The book is well and regularly entered but writing varies from good to bad. The last page but two contains two Baptisms only. The last page but one contains a list of “All Register Books extant Dec. 31, 1812.” It begins with the present first volume but wrongly entered as beginning in 1653.
Volume IV., marked outside Marriage Register No. 1. Marriages 1754~75. Ten leaves of ruled parchment in paper covers. Space being wasted on the first three pages a leaf of parchment had to be pasted in at end to take two surplus entries. It is in fair condition but badly dogseared as usual. Shut in this volume is a piece of paper recording, “April ye 29th 1772 being then Easter Sunday the Parish of Houghton was Rung to the Church with a hand Bell by mee John Gamble (? parish clerk) and sinn the Wife of Thomas Willson was byried May ye 12 by a Hand Bel and Sarah Illson June 54 and Doratha Warrin June 5: 27. “Septembr 20 they were chimed by one bell Sep 27 by 2 bels October 4 by 3 bells without Rops till the 11th then all the 5 Where chimed first With Rops 1772. “The Revrnt Mr. Robrt Cotton was the first the Bell was Rurg (sic) out for after it was new Rund (cast) at Houghton Buried November the 29 1772 one Houghton lest Sunday. Fees to Clergymen and the Churching of Wimming was then first paid for at Houghton to Mr. Wrag curat to Mr. Rich Cotton 1773 at 6 Pens apees Mrs. Sewil was the first.”
